Charity Johnson, 34, has allegedly been masquerading as 15-year-old Charity Stevens at the New Life Christian School in Longview, Texas, since Oct. 7, 2013.
Johnson was arrested today by police after reportedly giving false information to law enforcement.
“Everyone we talked to assumed she was a teenager like she said she was, because she looked like one,” Stuart Newlin, principal of the school, told ABC News (video below).
“She had friends," added Newlin. "Everybody liked her.”
“She came in with a guardian, there was no reason to be suspicious. Usually, parents come in, they fill out the paperwork and we take their word for it. If they come from another school, you transfer records. If they come from home school, they don’t have those records.”
Tamica Lincoln, an adult with whom Johnson had been living with, stated, “She acted like a kid. She did her homework. She got good report cards."
But Lincoln recently suspected the teen was much older when Johnson tried to join an at-risk group for women, which called Lincoln after a background check revealed Johnson’s true age.
"Officers arrived on scene and the suspect told officers that her name was Charite Stevens and that her birth date was Nov. 24, 1997. During the course of the investigation, the officer learned that her actual name is Charity Johnson with a birth date of Nov. 20, 1979,” Longview Police Department spokeswoman Debra Stiles told the News-Journal.
