Wisconsin woman and college student Brooke Baures was found dead in a dumbwaiter on Monday in the kitchen of a bar she had worked at.
Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched around 8 p.m. on Monday to the WingDam Bar and Saloon in Fountain City after Baures' body was discovered. Baures was an employee of the restaurant who often used the dumbwaiter before serving food, since the restaurant is a two-story building.
Though officers say there is no indication of a crime, the investigation has continued into how the dumbwaiter could have played a part in Baures’ death. According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, dumbwaiter accidents are rare, with only two occurring in the U.S. in the last 10 years.
Following the 21-year-old’s death, Winona State University released a statement that Baures was a senior majoring in social work. She was also a member of the WSU gymnastics team from 2011 to 2014.
“Brooke was a leader on that team and a very talented gymnast,” Eric Schoh, WSU Athletic Director, said. “This is a tremendous loss for our community.”
Sheriff’s investigators reported that an autopsy is being performed on Baures.
According to WingDam Saloon and Grill manager Amanda Schabacker, the restaurant was closed on Tuesday. Schabacker declined to comment any further.
