A woman in Mexico accidentally shot and killed her husband after he came home drunk. She reportedly pointed his gun at him as a joke, and then pulled the trigger without knowing there was a bullet in the chamber.
The incident occurred in the town of Hermosillo, Mexico. Rosa Isela Contreras Leyva, 41, heard her drunk husband enter the house at 3 a.m. after a late-night drinking session with a group of friends, Daily Mail reports.
Leyva's husband, Abel Tarango Avitia, 54, grabbed his gun and apparently started waving it around and announcing that he was the boss after Leyva went downstairs and told him to be quiet.
His wife took the gun, thinking it was not loaded, and then pointed it at her husband to show him that she was not scared. She told police her husband always left his gun unloaded, so she didn't expect it to have a bullet in it.
“I had no idea there was a bullet inside, I was just messing around with him and thought it was funny that he was so scared of an unloaded gun and was trying to duck out of the way,” she said.
She was horrified when she pulled the trigger and heard a loud bang, only to see that she fired a bullet into her husband's throat. An ambulance quickly arrived at the house but Avitia was already dead. Leyva was later arrested.
The incident is a grim reminder of the types of accidents that can occur when firearms are handled irresponsibly. A similar incident to the one in Hermosillo occurred in Jacksonville, Florida, in early Oct. 2015.
In that case, News 4 Jax reported that a teenage couple, aged 17 and 18, had been casually playing with a gun while they were smoking marijuana. Jacksonville Police Lt. Steve Gallaher said the boyfriend was jokingly pointing a pistol with laser sight at his 17-year-old girlfriend while he was rolling a joint, and then accidentally pulled the trigger and shot the girl in the face.
