David Mitchell, who is African-American, claims that a white UPS driver recently handed him a makeshift noose during a delivery to an Alpharetta, Ga., company.
Mitchell says the driver, who has acted strangely since they met, actually made the noose right in front of him.
“He refused to give me the package to deliver and I said, ‘I work here,'” Mitchell told WSBTV (video below). “I go pick up and this is what he made in front of me and handed to me. Signifying a noose. A makeshift noose.”
Mitchell recalling telling a co-worker, “I said, ‘I'm trying to be all right you won't believe what just occurred.’”
UPS would not identify the driver, but did say in a statement: "It is under investigation, and we are taking this very seriously. We have met with the customer, and there is nothing more to share since it's still being investigated."
According to The Root.com, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is doing their own investigation of the incident, which may be a possible hate crime.
Mitchell claims UPS reassigned the driver to another route, however, he is worried about retaliation as the driver knows where he works.
