Carjackers Pose Dummy As Child Sitting In Road

A motorist received a scare after a child she saw sitting in the middle of the road at night turned out to be a dummy used as bait by a pair of carjackers.

WGHP reports that an unidentified 33-year-old woman was driving home from work in Newport, North Carolina, when she spotted what she thought was a small child sitting in the middle of the road.

Perplexed, she stopped her vehicle. Suddenly, two male carjackers approached from both sides of her car. The men, dressed in hooded sweatshirts, pulled at each of her door handles, but fortunately she had locked both doors so they could not enter.

The woman immediately sped away and called police.

Authorities have been unable to track down the suspects, but they did confiscate the dummy, which was made using a fake plastic head and children's clothing, including a Field & Stream shirt.

Major Jason Wank of the Carteret County Sheriff's Office said that the woman's decision to drive away was "absolutely the right thing to do."

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Wank claims that the police destroyed the dummy in case it was booby-trapped.  Both suspects are still at large, and police are warning locals to lock their doors and remain in their vehicles if approached.
