A Houston, Texas, man became a hero for a family he was staying with after a fire started in their home.
Thomas Smith was staying with a 66-year-old woman and her two granddaughters in their spare bedroom, KPRC 2 reports. At around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 15, Smith said he was awoken by a loud boom from inside the house.
He climbed out of bed and saw smoke as he ran towards the woman’s bedroom.
“I jumped out the bed and ran to her room, and something was on top of her — sheetrock and what not,” he told KPRC 2.
Smith freed the woman from the debris and rushed her outside.
He then reentered the house and saved her 8- and 10-year-old granddaughters, who were asleep at the time of the explosion and fire.
When firefighters arrived, the family was safely outside and unhurt.
The fire is still being investigated, though firefighters said it appeared to be electrical. The woman owned the house for 40 years. Her granddaughters reportedly lost nearly everything they own in the fire — including laptops and clothing.
