Instead of a tip, an 18-year-old waitress received a "nasty and racist" comment on her receipt (video below).
Sadie Elledge was serving a man and a woman at Jess' Lunch in downtown Harrisonburg on Aug. 15, WHSV reported. While taking their order for two gyros, sodas, and a Greek salad, Elledge said she was feeling uncomfortable.
“They wouldn't talk to me,” Elledge told WHSV. “They would just nod their heads.”
When the time came to pay the bill, Elledge saw the woman signing the receipt. Instead of a tip amount, the receipt read: “We only tip citizens.”
“It shouldn't even matter, I just feel like it's rude and disrespectful,” Elledge said. “I’ve never met -- I’ve never done anything to them.”
Elledge, who is of Mexican and Honduran descent, said she was born in the United States. She added that the woman who signed the receipt had an accent herself.
Elledge’s boss, Angeliki Floros, said she doesn’t want the customers back in the immigrant-created and owned business.
“Coward is the word to describe what they did,” Floros told the news station. “I have worse words to use. But let's go with coward.”
On Aug. 18, Elledge got a letter from local residents who had heard about the incident and covered the tip. The waitress said she would still serve the customers again, despite their nasty note.
“It makes me the stronger person to not let these things bother me because I know I'm a good person,” said Elledge. “I know that.”
Still, Floros said she wants an apology for Elledge.
“I would like for them to not come here unless they regret what they did,” said Floros.
Elledge’s grandfather, John Elledge, was also shocked by the receipt.
“She was calm and collected,” John, who is an attorney, told The Huffington Post. “I was more upset.”
John said Sadie did not tell him about the receipt.
“One of my other granddaughters works at my firm as a secretary,” he said. “She told me and I flew off the handle.”
John posted a photo of the receipt on Facebook and it quickly went viral.
“The way I understand it, the woman who signed the receipt is at the restaurant this very second with the police,” John added. “She’s angry and the police are there. Apparently, she just signed the receipt. She didn’t write the comment.”
