Sacramento police are investigating after a homeless woman led them to a dead body.
The investigation began when authorities saw a homeless woman casually walking along the sidewalk carrying a skull on a stick Oct. 19, KTXL reported.
“There was a transient female walking down the 2900 block of Connie Drive,” Sacramento police Sgt. Bryce Heinlein told KTXL. “She actually had a skull in her possession.
“A call like this is not something that happens every day. We hope we can get down to the bottom of what caused this person to become deceased.”
Police confronted the woman at an abandoned house.
“She brought the officers to the area where she located the skull," Heinlein explained. “When officers got out there, they located a decomposed body.”
The body was only a couple of blocks away at an abandoned homeless encampment.
Philip, who lives near the encampment, said the homeless woman’s name is Victoria and that she has lived there for years. He pointed to the exact area where the body was found.
“Right there. Right past those bushes you see… To the right, right back there," Philip told the news station.
Warren, another neighbor, said he had smelled something foul in the area. He thought it was a dead cat at first.
“I went to walk back there and thought, Damn! What the hell is that smell? It make me sick to my stomach, so I turned my a** around and came back here,” Warren recalled.
“Twenty cop cars out here. And the cops got her out there,” Philip said. “And they’re taking pictures of her holding a head. Then they get her hands and CSI showing up.”
The coroner will determine the identity of the body and cause of death by Friday, the New York Daily News reported.
