A Pennsylvania man has been charged with the murder of his own grandmother and the attempted rape of his grandmother and his mother.
Kevin Havelow, 23, reportedly killed his grandmother at the home they shared with his mother and sister on Jan. 19, WPVI reports.
"This was a brutal attack,” Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan Attorney Hogan said in a statement, according to WPVI. “The family is traumatized. The Pennsylvania State Police did an outstanding job responding to a remarkably volatile situation.”
According to police, Havelow was smoking marijuana with a friend and asked if his friend could stay the night. His mother said no and that’s when things took a turn for the worst.
Havelow reportedly thought his family was trying to prevent him from having a normal social life, so he attacked his mother, throwing her to the ground and sexually assaulting her. His sister quickly called 911 and his mother was able to escape.
Havelow then did the same thing to his 81-year-old grandmother, though unfortunately, she was unable to escape. According to officials, Havelow got knives from the kitchen and stabbed his grandmother over 20 times in the head, chest and stomach. She died at the scene.
Pennsylvania State Troopers arrived at the scene soon after and Havelow’s sister let them in. He was arrested and has since been charged with first degree murder and attempted rape, among other offenses.
During the investigation, it was discovered that Havelow checked himself into Brandywine Hospital in December 2015 for attempting self harm.
"Every homicide is disturbing, but a homicide of an elderly person within a family is particularly troubling,” Hogan said. “We are all grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and the cooperation of the family to address this matter quickly, thoroughly, and justly.”
