Mom Arrested After Being Drunk All Day

A Connecticut woman was arrested after police reportedly discovered her in an intoxicated state while caring for her two young children.

Victoria Leonard, 37, of Fairfield, Connecticut, was arrested and charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count of breach of peace on April 24, the Fairfield Citizen reported.

The charges were filed after police responded to a 911 call from the woman's 9-year-old daughter around 6:40 p.m. that day. The child said her mother had fallen on the stairs and appeared to have hit her head. Leonard was reportedly conscious but was still on the stairs hours later and shouting the name of the children's father, who lived with them but had not been seen since April 22, according to Mad World News.

Emergency dispatchers told the young girl to wait outside with her 4-year-old sister until police arrived, and they stayed on the line with the girl until the officers showed up.

When officers entered the home, they found Leonard facedown on her bed with a cigarette in her hand, the Fairfield Citizen reported. Her speech was slurred, and she became agitated while talking to police.

The woman appeared to have consumed a large amount of alcohol and may have been drunk for most of the day, Mad World News reported.

Officers found the house to be in a "deplorable" condition, with clothes and food strewn all over the home. The house also smelled strongly of cat urine and did not have working smoke detectors, which prompted the local fire department to install detectors.

The girls' aunt, who had just cared for them over the weekend, returned to take custody of the children after Leonard was arrested. The state's Department of Families and Children was notified of the incident.

Leonard is currently being held on $1,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 6.
