Stolen Ferrari Recovered After 28 Years

When officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection saw the red 1981 Ferrari somebody was trying to ship to Poland, they had a suspicious feeling about it.

Federal agents in Los Angeles learned their suspicion was justified when they discovered the Ferrari being shipped had been stolen 28 years ago.

According to a statement from the CBP, the car's vehicle identification number "raised a red flag and prompted further scrutiny."

After investigating, agents learned the sports car had been stolen from a consignment lot on July 19, 1987, in Orange County, California. The car had previously been shipped to Norway in 2005.

According to KNBC, the owner of the car was paid by his insurance company when the car was initially stolen.

The car is estimated to be worth roughly $50,000 today, CNN says.

Officials have not determined whether anyone will face charges related to the theft or if the car will be returned to the original owner.
