(NBC Connecticut) A Hartford toddler is recovering in the hospital after falling out of a third story window on Broad Street while his mother smoked marijuana on Saturday evening, police said.
The 2-year-old was playing near an open window in his kitchen around 5 p.m. on Saturday while his mother was smoking marijuana at the kitchen table, Hartford police said.
[N]eighbors said they visited the child at the hospital and that he is going to be OK.
“Nobody’s perfect,” Angel Rivera said. “Things do happen. … I never heard her mistreat her kids or anything. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a good mom.”
The headline to this sad story is Boy Falls From 3rd Floor Window as Mom Smokes Marijuana: Cops. Yet another not-so-subtle slander of marijuana users using correlation to imply causation. This is just an accident that could have happened to any parent who isn’t paying close attention to their toddler.
Toddlers escape the attention of parents. Sometimes they have accidents. The mom could just as easily have been distracted by watching TV, text messaging, talking on the phone, taking a nap, or making a sandwich.
But as the headline and comments on the story illustrate, most people are eager to jump on the reefer madness bandwagon and blame the pot. These are usually people who’ve never used cannabis and imagine one puff turns you into a bleary-eyed reckless zombie.
26 million adults in this country use cannabis and some of them are even parents. Ironically, the prohibition of cannabis forces these folks to use their herb out of the children’s sight, lest they inadvertently mention something in school and bring the cops to take away mommy and daddy.
If you’re really concerned for children and the accidental and not-so-accidental injuries their drug-using parents subject them to, look up the statistics on alcohol… you know, the legal drug.
