A single father who was down to his last $100 received the surprise of a lifetime when he won $1.2 million on a lotto scratch-off card.

Joseph Carillo, a 31-year-old pizza delivery man, decided to test his luck after a friend of his had won a few times.

"My buddy was on a winning streak, winning $100 scratchers this past week,” Carillo said, according to a California Lottery news release, NBC News reports. “I was getting frustrated with the guy: I'm moving; I need the money! So I asked him: 'How do you do it? Give me some luck!'"

Carillo bought three Set for Life scratchers at a local liquor store for $2 each.

After uncovering the word "Life" on one of the scratchers, Carillo knew he had won some money -- but did not realize he had won the grand prize of $4,000 a month for 25 years until he handed his ticket to the store manager.

In video footage recorded by Paradise Express Liquor store in Hemet, California, Carillo is seen high-fiving the store manager and being congratulated by other customers.

“He was excited because he thought he won $4,000,” store manager Efrain Murillo said, according to The Press Enterprise. “I looked at it and I said, ‘Bro, you got a lot more than $4,000.’”

“If I'd won $50, it would have been great,” Carillo said. “I'm tickled, I'm flabbergasted, I'm waiting for my heart to explode, I'm waiting to go to sleep and never wake up again. I don't know! My buddy said there was a 1-in-6-million chance to win the grand prize. It's me!"

“It couldn’t have come at a better time,” he added.

Carillo said the lotto winnings will give him a chance to pay off his debts and pursue his dream career. He does not plan to quit his delivery job.

“I don't want to stop working,” Carillo said. "I think that would be foolish."

Carillo chose to take the lump-sum of $696,000 before taxes instead of $4,000 a month for 25 years.
