A Washington Post reporter told MSNBC Wednesday that Democrats fail to pass gun control legislation because they are “in the pocket of the NRA.”
Nia-Malika Henderson said former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s $50 million pledge to fight the National Rifle Association could be a lost cause because Democrats have made the NRA a “formidable force.”
Henderson said if Bloomberg is careful about the states in which he chooses to spend that money he might manage to make strides.
“But, again, I think the NRA is a formidable force, and it’s a formidable force because Democrats, you know, very much are in the pocket of the NRA and they didn’t want to vote against the NRA. So this is an uphill battle.”
Bloomberg said Wednesday the money is for a lobbying group called Everytown for Gun Safety that will focus on expanding the background check system.
He told the New York Times he spent $14 million in federal campaign contribution in 2012 to gun-control candidates.
"They say, 'We don’t care. We’re going to go after you,'" Bloomberg said of the NRA. "'If you don’t vote with us we’re going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we’re never going to stop.'"
