A house in Georgia caught on fire and everyone made it out safely, but a man re-entered the burning home to make a rescue … of his beer.
Six adults and two young children were inside watching TV when the room began filling with smoke. After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, Walter Serpit, who walks with a cane, went back in the burning house to retrieve the beer, according to WTVM.
"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," Serpit said, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this backdraft was about to kill me."
The Raw Story notes that once inside, a mounting backdraft caused the front door to slam shut behind Serpit, but he was still able to retrieve several cans of beer from the refrigerator and escape unhurt.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but residents say a recently installed water heater is to blame.
WTVM also notes that the Red Cross arrived shortly after firefighters extinguished the flames and they are assisting the family as they get back on their feet.
