Wal-Mart Employee Refuses To Write 'Gay' On A Cake (Video)

Two teens experienced a lot of love and support after video of their “promposal” went viral, but not everybody was supportive (video below).

According to Jennifer Sandoval, the aunt of one of the teens from the viral video, a Las Vegas Wal-Mart employee refused to write the word “gay” on a cake.

Jacob Lescenski, a straight teen, became an Internet sensation after asking his gay best friend, Anthony Martinez, to prom in a video that went viral.

Sandoval went to her local Wal-Mart to buy her nephew, Martinez, and his best friend a cake to celebrate the prom date.

“It said: ‘You’re gay, he’s straight, you’re going to prom, you couldn’t have had a better date,’” Sandoval told KVVU.

According to Martinez’s aunt, when she told the store associate what she wanted written, she was told that they would not be able to write the word “gay” on a cake because it was against store policy. She asked to speak to a supervisor.

"Supervisor takes my phone, looks at it, and was like stuck for a minute, and she was like, 'OK, I'm sorry, we can't use this,’” Sandoval said. “And then I said, 'I'm going to ask you what I asked her because you're the supervisor. Why can't I use this? I don't understand. It's one word. It's gay.’”

Eventually, Sandoval settled for a cake that said, “You matter, prom kings.”

”Even though he liked what was on there already, I just wanted what I originally wanted," Sandoval said.

When KVVU reached out to Wal-Mart for a comment, a representative said that after an investigation, the company discovered that the proper management was not contacted in the incident. The representative confirmed there is nothing in the store’s policy that would prevent an associate from writing the word “gay” on a cake.

"It wasn't hurtful,” Sandoval said. “It was to make my nephew happy, to see a smile on his face. I love that smile, to see that smile, that's all I wanted, and I'm disappointed. I really am.”
