A waitress in Texas extended a small act of kindness for a couple who recently lost their baby by paying their bill.
Kayla Lane had been waiting tables at the West Side Cafe in Fort Worth, Texas when she met Shaun and Debbie Riddle.
The Riddles were surprised the waitress remembered their faces as they had not been to the restaurant in a while.
“I remember people,” Lane said. “I’m really good at remembering people.”
She also remembered the couple had just had a newborn baby girl named Glory. When she asked about her though, she learned what had happened.
“They kind of looked at each other and were very silent,” Lane recalled.
The Riddles informed her the baby had died a month earlier.
“We said, ‘Well, she passed away four weeks ago,’” said Shaun.
According to CBS, the child passed away at 9 weeks old after she failed to wake up from a nap.
“I’m like, ‘Oh gosh, I made them remember!’ even though it’s going through their minds all day, every day,” Lane said.
When their meal ended, Lane decided to take matters into her own hands and show them an act of kindness.
“Your ticket has been paid for,” the message read on their bill. “We are terribly sorry for your loss. God Bless. —The West Side.”
“I was just shocked,” Debbie told reporters.
When Shaun tried to pay for the ticket, he was refused.
“And, she said, ‘No, no, don’t worry,” Shaun recounted. “'The company took care of it.'"
The manager of the West Side Cafe later confirmed it was Lane who paid for the meal.
According to CBS, she often picks up the bills of customers.
“Like with military, firefighters,” Lane said. “I feel privileged that I’m able to do it.”
Though she does not have a lot of money, she does it to make someone's day.
The Riddles were happy saying, “We were grateful to see that there are good people in the world and that people want to help.”
