Man Finds His Lost Dog Being Sold On Craigslist

Virginia woman Jessica Colleran was arrested on Sunday after police said she fraudulently took a lost dog and listed it for sale on Craigslist.

Josh King, the 3-year-old Siberian Husky’s owner, said Nikita escaped from his home in Chesapeake on Saturday morning around 10 a.m. When he began to lose hope that she wouldn’t return, he suddenly found a lead in his search. He heard from his friend that Nikita was on a "found dog" ad on Craigslist.

When Josh King contacted the man who posted the "found dog" ad, the man said "a woman came and claimed her so he gave us all of her information,” King said.

King later found Colleran’s ad on Craigslist listing Nikita for sale, so he took action and called the 22-year-old pretending to be an interested buyer. He agreed to meet her on Sunday at a park in Portsmouth, though she didn’t know the Portsmouth Police and Chesapeake Animal Control would also be attending.

“She’s like, 'No, no the person gave me the dog' and she just kept saying that over and over,” King said after the meeting.

Nikita was scanned for a microchip to confirm King’s ownership following Colleran’s arrest.

King said he was grateful to the person who originally posted his dog on Craigslist, and that he was bewildered that anybody would think of selling a lost dog online.

Colleran was charged with obtaining property under false pretenses and is currently being held at the Chesapeake Correctional Center. According to court documents, Colleran said she tried to sell the dog to get money for her legal defense on a pending charge of unlawful wounding.
