Hadiya Pendleton, 15, was killed in Chicago on Tuesday, just a week after she performed at President Obama’s inauguration (video below).
Pendleton was hanging out at Vivian Gordon Harsh Park near her school at around 2:30 p.m. when an unidentified gunman jumped a fence in the park and opened fire, reports WBBM-TV.
Pendleton was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, but died an hour later from a gunshot wound.
An unidentified 16-year-old boy was also wounded in the attack.
Chicago police said that many of the people in the park were gang members, but Pendleton had no known gang affiliations.
Pendleton performed at inaugural events in Washington D.C. last week with the King College Prep band and drill team, reports the Chicago Tribune.
As of Tuesday evening, police had no suspects in the shooting.
Witness Bonita O’Bannion told WBBM-TV: “There has to be an end to it. It’s just too much. The children cannot go to school. They’re in fear.”
