Video: NYPD Wound Nine Bystanders While Shooting Gunman Jeffrey Johnson

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg praised the NYPD for stopping Empire State Building shooter Jeffrey Johnson (graphic video below) on Friday.

However, on Saturday, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that police wounded nine bystanders with bullets when they shot at Johnson on West 33rd St, reports the Daily Mail.

One of the bystanders, pictured here, Robert Asika, was shot in the elbow.

Commissioner Kelly said on Saturday: "It appears that all nine of the victims were struck either by fragments or by bullets fired by police."

After Johnson killed his former boss, Steve Ercolino, he tried to scape on foot down W. 33rd St. Construction workers alerted nearby police, who gave chase.

Commissioner Kelly said that the police officers who chased Johnson had "a gun right in their face" and "responded quickly, and they responded appropriately. These officers, having looked at the tape myself, had absolutely no choice."

Johnson was shot seven times, while nine bystanders were wounded, but their injuries were not life-threatening.
