Ashley Brown was trapped in her third floor apartment in Stone Mountain, Georgia, when she made the decision to drop her baby to a crowd below and lower her 3-year-old toddler down with a rope.
Video footage (below) of the scene shows the calm and collected 23-year-old mom getting her children safely out of the burning building and into waiting arms of bystanders.
Brown said that dropping baby James was "the most difficult decision of her life." She told AJC.com: "Some people were saying drop him. And some people were saying don't."
"(Neighbor Lawrence Fort) looked at me and I looked at him. I said, 'Please catch my baby.' He said, 'I promise I will,' and he caught him."'
After a kitchen fire broke out in his apartment, Fort says he pounded on his neighbors' doors to alert them to the fire. He then grabbed a fluffy coat, ran outside and yelled to Brown to drop her baby into his arms.
Then Brown tied a rope around her three-year-old daughter Jayden's waist and arm and lowered the child to the neighbors beneath the apartment window.
The family cat also survived after being tossed from the third-floor apartment.
Four people, including the children, were transported to a hospital in stable condition, police said. Brown said both of her children are doing fine after the ordeal, reports AJC.com.
