A 47-year-old woman, whose name has been released, was walking with her 14-year-old son outside the Target store in East Harlem (New York City) Sunday night, when she was hit in the head with a falling shopping cart after a group of kids allegedly pushed the cart off a fourth floor walkway that connects the store to a parking garage.
The cart bounced off a sign before landing on the unidentified woman below, witnesses said.
Two 12-year-olds are in custody. They face assault charges and criminal possession of weapon (the cart). They’ll be charged as juveniles.
Moments before the incident, witness Carlos Vargas said he spotted the kids pushing the cart near the fourth-level parking lot: “Their friend was trying to stop it, saying, ‘Don’t do it!’ But they didn’t care.”
“Whatever happens, happens,” Vargas said one of the teens responded before they launched the cart from the overhead walkway.
“Her son, a young boy, was on top of her crying,” Vargas said. “It was bone-chilling to see that.”
“It hit her in the head. She just collapsed,” said Orlando Campos who ran to help the woman as blood pooled around her head. “She wasn’t moving at all.”
Emergency workers responded and rushed the woman to Harlem Hospital, where she was in critical condition last night.
