Gunman Kills at Least 12 People During Batman "The Dark Knight Rises" Opening

Publish date:

At least 12 people were killed and 50 others were wounded early Friday morning when a gunman opened fire in a jam-packed Aurora, Colo. movie theater.

The movie theater was crowded at the late hour because the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, premiered at midnight.

According to the Denver Post, 10 people were killed immediately when the shooting spree began and the others died later at the hospital. Originally officials reported that 14 had been killed; however, that number has since been revised. At least 50 other people were injured, but that count as well as the death toll could rise as more information trickles in.

The youngest person hurt was a six-year-old girl.

Witnesses on scene report that tear gas went off in the theater. Also, at least one witness told NBC station KUSA-Denver that he saw a large man wearing a riot helmet, goggles and bullet-proof vest at some point.

The shooter apparently entered the theater through an emergency exit.

A 24-year-old male was arrested in the theater parking lot. He was found to be in possession of a gas mask and ammunition. There are also unconfirmed reports that a rifle and two handguns may have been found in his car.

Aurora is a suburb near Denver.

Stay tuned for updates as more information comes in.
