Gary Smith, a former New Mexico Republican candidate for Congress, was arrested on Friday evening for allegedly slashing his opponent Janice Arnold-Jones' tires.
Arnold-Jones, the Republican nominee, gave police a home surveillance video (below) showing an older man slashing her tires on December 20 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Arnold-Jones told the police that the man was Smith, reports Mediaite.com.
Police Ofiicer Lorenzo Garcia told KOB-TV: "I looked at Gary Smith’s MVD photo and compared it with the video and it showed it did appear to be him."
The rivalry between the two Republicans goes back to April, when Arnold-Jones got Smith removed from the GOP ballot by telling a court that he did not have enough petition signatures to be in the Republican Primary Election.
Arnold-Jones told KOB-TV: "This is not politics. I know what it’s like when there is political retribution. You lose your bills, you lose your office, you lose your parking space. That’s none of this. This is an assault on my private property on our residence and I believe it’s by someone who is not very stable."
When asked if he had slashed her tires, Smith told KOB-TV: “I don’t even know what’s going on. They haven’t explained anything to me yet. I don’t even know why they came to my house.”
