Daniel Richards, California Fish and Wildlife Commission President, has caused outrage with a picture of himself smiling and holding a dead mountain lion (picture and video below).
While hunting mountain lions has been illegal in California since 1990, Richards reportedly killed the animal in Idaho where it is legal.
However, if he brought the carcass back to California, that would be illegal, per California Prop. 117.
Tim Dunbar, executive of the Mountain Lion Foundation, told KABC: “Californians sort of trust the Fish and Game Department and their commission to be the protecters of our wildlife resources, and this person is showing that he really doesn’t care.”
Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, told the San Jose Mercury News: “He’s thumbing his nose at California law. He’s mocking it. Frankly, I think he should face the music and step down. He’s done something that’s a disgrace to his position and to responsible hunters in California.”
