Three young men were trying to enter a Valero gas station at 3:30 a.m. in Houston, Texas, this week, but the door was locked.
The young men got into an argument with an unidentified clerk, who unlocked the door.
One of the men, Alexander Calloway, punched the clerk in the face.
In response, the clerk pulled out a gun and shot Calloway in the stomach, which was recorded on surveillance video (below).
Calloway was rushed to the Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition, reports KHOU 11 News.
Valero gas station owner George Hlaiheo told KHOU 11 News that he stands by his employee's right to self-defense, but fired him: “For the sake of the community, we feel very strongly that he won’t be coming back to work.”
Community members have marched in front of the store and demanded justice for Alexander Calloway, even though they have not seen the video of the incident.
Calloway’s father told KHOU 11 News: “I’m just hurt. He didn’t have to shoot my son. He didn’t have to shoot my son.”
He did not explain why his son punched the clerk in the face.
