A baby chimpanzee born in March of this year was killed on Tuesday afternoon by a full-grown, adult chimpanzee at the L.A. Zoo. Shocked spectators watched the entire attack unfold, helpless to save the baby as it was getting taken down right in front of them.
"Chimpanzee behavior can sometimes be aggressive and violent, and the zoo is sorry that visitors had to be exposed to this," a statement released by the L.A. Zoo said. "This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss for the zoo and especially the Great Ape Team who have worked diligently to care for the infant and its mother since its birth."
The mother of the deceased chimp was allowed to keep her baby overnight so as to have time to grieve.
