Venezuelan beauty queen Genesis Carmona was shot Wednesday, making her the fifth person killed since the country’s recent uprising.
The 22-year-old was a model and local beauty queen who was shot in the head in Valencia. She had been in college and was a semester away from graduating.
“How long are we going to live like this?” an anonymous relative said. “How long do we have to tolerate this pressure, with them killing us?”
The killing was one of many in the past three weeks of protests against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s government. Imrpisoned protest leader Leopoldo Lopez has urged supporters to continue pressuring the socialist regime.
“Today more than ever, our cause has to be the exit of this government,” Lopez said in a pre-recorded video that was to be released if he was captured. “Let’s fight.”
Maduro responded by calling the recent protestors fascists and warned that he would not accept being challenged. The Venezuelan leader added that he would react to Carmona’s murder with an iron fist against those who keep “slaughtering” the country’s people.
