Man Says He Was Initially Fired After Using Gun To Save Woman's Life

A Warren, Michigan, valet attendant was reportedly fired Feb. 10 after trying to save a woman’s life by attempting to shoot her attacker.

"Had it not been for his quick action and quick thinking, pulling out his concealed weapon, she might have been murdered on site," Mayor of Warren Jim Fouts said, according to Fox 2 News.

Still, General Motors Technical Center allegedly fired Didarul Sarder for carrying the firearm, although they later re-hired him.

Sarder recounted the termination to Fox 2 News:

[The GM employee] said, "You shouldn't have had a firearm here. After this is done he needs to be escorted off the property. He's not welcome back here." I was really bummed out. I got a little emotional.

Yet despite the initial firing, Sarder said he had no regrets.

"I would do it all over again," he said. "If I could save this woman's life over a job. I can get another job."

Stephanie Kerr, an employee at the GM Technical Center in Warren, was reportedly stabbed by her 32-year-old daughter right outside the center's main entrance. Sarder was coming into work that morning when he heard her screams.

"The lady kept saying 'I'm dying, someone help' and it was just natural reaction," Sarder said. "I just see this lady getting stabbed. I only had like half a second to think and I unholstered my firearm and pointed it at her to drop the knife."

The 32-year-old had already stabbed her mother in the neck, back and abdomen but stopped after Sarder intervened. The stabbing reportedly occurred after the two women argued.

Sarder told the suspect to stay put until the police arrived and arrested her.

Kerr is currently in critical condition.

"I hope she makes it," Sarder said. "Maybe those few seconds before the police arrived could be the difference between life and death."

Fouts called Sarder a hero on his Facebook page.

“I hope to honor and reward this good citizen for being a hero in time of need," he wrote in the Feb. 10 Facebook post. "Heroes should be rewarded not terminated. Didarul is a resident of Warren and a resident that we can all be proud of!”
