Air Force Lieutenant Found Dead In United Arab Emirates

Anais Tobar, a United States Air Force Lieutenant, was found dead in her room in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on July 18. Authorities are still investigating the cause of Tobar's death.

Tobar, 25, had been stationed in the UAE to support a U.S.-led operation against ISIS. The Air Force Times reported that Tobar's injuries were not combat-related, though the cause of death is not yet clear.

First Lt. Tobar, who was born in Caracas, Venezuela and grew up in Miami, Florida, was assigned to the Fourth Maintenance Squadron at the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, according to the Miami Herald. The squadron is reported to have 600 personnel.

Tobar's family friend, Mercy Mcgee, said that her family had been notified by six Air Force airmen later on July 18. McGee added that Tobar and her mother were very close, and that her mother had even moved to North Carolina to be nearer to her daughter.

"There are not enough words to tell you what a loving and wonderful girl she was," said McGee of Tobar. "She was God-fearing, deeply devoted to serving others and her country."

McGee told the Orlando Sentinel that Tobar had enlisted in the Air Force after attending Florida State University in order "to see the world." McGee added that Tobar had in 2015 been awarded the Fourth Maintenance Group's Company Grade Officer of the Year award.

Col. Christopher Sage, a Fourth Fighter Wing commander at Tobar's base, said that the entire base was mourning the loss of Tobar.

"The entire base joins me in sending our deepest sympathies to the Tobar family during this period of bereavement," said Sage in a statement. "The bonds that tie the Air Force family together are strong, both down-range and at home station."

"This tragedy affects us all," Sage continued. "Put your arm around those who are grieving, both personally and professionally."
