Police in Maple Grove, Minnesota, are investigating the death of a 1-year-old after the baby was driven to a local Walmart store by a caregiver while unresponsive.
On Thursday, medical officials responded to the Walmart store after receiving a call about an unresponsive baby on the premises. According to reports, the child’s mother, Khadija Norman, was an employee at the store. Dillon Howard, the 21-year-old caregiver who drove her to the store, said that he had just given the baby a bath when he stepped out of the room to get a diaper. When he returned, she was unresponsive.
After medical officials arrived, they transported the child to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Despite Howard’s version of events, neighbors reported that they heard loud noises coming from the apartment the night of the incident, leading police to launch an investigation. A search warrant was served on May 8.
“Dillon Howard is not reporting a mechanical mechanism that would account for the accidental death,” Brooklyn Park police stated.
Howard has a criminal history that includes charges of domestic assault by strangulation, fourth-degree assault and domestic abuse. He has yet to be charged in the baby’s death.
