Two Sons in 19 Days: Ca. Mom Dinyal New Loses Both Kids to Street Violence

An Oakland, Ca. mother is mourning the loss of both her sons, who died in subsequent homicides within three weeks of each other.

"I have no more kids," said Dinyal New, 41.

New’s youngest son, Lee Weathersby III, 13, was killed on New Year’s Eve while walking home from the Oakland Boys & Girls Club. Less than three weeks later, her 19-year-old son Lamar Broussard was shot in a car less than a mile away from where the site of Lee's slaying.

"I'm still numb about Lee, so I don't know if my heart has enough room to handle Lamar's death. This is like a dream right now," New said. "I know there is a God, but I'm like, 'Why would he give a mother so much pain to handle within 19 days?' This is really hard on me."

"He was a good kid. He didn't deserve what happened to him. None of them deserved what happened to them," said Shakia Green, the victims' cousin.

Now New and her family are hoping for justice. So far no witnesses have come forward and no arrests have been made. The two boys were half brothers, and looked "totally different," according to New. She doesn’t know if the killings cold be related.

"I'm upset. Both of my sons are dead," said Lee Weathersby Jr., Lee’s father and Broussard’s stepfather. "We're not supposed to be burying our children. It's supposed to be the other way around. They're supposed to looking out for us."

"Police need to find them. They need to be locked up," he said of the killers.

Oakland police said that Broussard and the other man who was shot while riding with him were targeted, according to ABC 7. The killers were in another vehicle.

New’s word to parents as she awaits justice: “Talk to your kids, or if you see them doing wrong, pull them to the side and chastise them and tell them that this is wrong."
