A brawl broke out over a pair of new Nike Air Jordan 2 Retro “Wing It” sneakers that ended in a shooting, injuring two people.
The coveted $200 shoes went on sale on March 5, creating disruptions throughout Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Madison, Wisconsin, as shoppers hoped to score a pair of Michael Jordan’s new line of shoes, reports WCCO-TV.
In Madison, a fight broke out among a mob of 60 shoppers after finding out Finish Line Footwear only had 10 pairs, according to New York Daily News.
But in the Minneapolis area, the problems took a more dangerous turn and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office responded to shots being fired in a Foot Locker store's parking lot in a strip mall in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
“It was absolutely crazy,” witness Latrissa Favorite told WCCO-TV. “I just hear the police screaming ‘Get down! Get down!’”
Another witness says the shooting broke out at the checkout line.
“There was a little altercation over the shoes about someone in line. It was a lot of commotion. I don’t know who was shooting, but somebody started shooting like six times,” said Latoya Sims of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
As bystanders ducked for cover outside the Foot Locker, the bullets hit two people.
Authorities say they found more than a dozen bullet casings on the ground, according to WCCO-TV. Police say those hit by bullets are expected to survive.
“It makes you sad for the people and the mentality and mind frame that we have, that we have to kill somebody. That nobody’s life is valued anymore,” Favorite said.
No suspects have been detained and authorities are still interviewing witnesses.
