At least one dog has died after being groomed at a PetSmart in New Jersey.
On Dec. 29, 2017, Danielle DiNapoli dropped off her 8-year-old bulldog Scruffles, reported WGHP.
One hour later, a store employee called DiNapoli and told her they'd sent the dog to a nearby vet.
By the time, DiNapoli arrived at the veterinarian's office, Scruffles was dead.
"She was just a great wonderful lovable dog, she loved people, she loved being in our house, she loved family she loved playing with the tub she was just a beautiful joy," the grieving DiNapoli recalled.
Heartbroken and outraged, DiNapoli started a Facebook page called "Justice for Scruffles."
There, she connected with another woman who alleged that her dog had also passed away after going to the same PetSmart location. Other commenters shared their own experiences with the chain.
One person said she took her 4-year-old dog to get her nails done when she had a "near miss."
"When I returned I saw my [dog] on the table with the loop around her neck - trying to jump from the table in fear with no one even around her or watching her, tongue hanging out and turning purple," one woman commented on the Justice for Scruffles Facebook page.
"I ran in there so fast and got her from the table and ran her over to PetSmarts vet to get checked out," she added. "The vet there walked over to the groomers and read them the riot act, apologized profusely for their inadequacies - and did her nails and examination for free. The groomer stopped me on the way out and had the nerve to want to charge me - for doing nothing!"
PetSmart provided a statement to WGHP in response to DiNapoli's story:
We are truly saddened by the loss of Scruffles. We immediately conducted a comprehensive internal investigation and found the associates involved followed all policies and procedures consistent with care and services provided to breeds such as bulldogs. The outstanding piece of the investigation is the result of the necropsy report, which will likely assist in understanding the overall circumstances leading to Scruffles’ unfortunate passing. Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Scruffles’ family, and we continue to be in contact with them during this difficult time.
However, DiNapoli says she has yet to receive a report about the incident from the company.
PetSmart did not comment on the reported death of the second dog.
