Twitter Goes Down, Victim of Hacker Attack

Twitter users trying to tweet -- the popular site's lingo for writing a personal update or comment -- encountered a roadblock this morning when the site experienced an outage. As of 12:20 p.m. EDT the site was still down -- but is back up now.

TechCrunch reported that Twitter said the outage was due to a "denial-of-service attack," according to the latest post on Twitter's status page. The update read:

"We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly."

According to USA Today's "Technology Live" blog: "Hackers commonly use a denial of service attack to cause computers to slow down or crash. Hackers launch the attacks by taking over thousands of everyday PCs that don't have adequate anti-virus and other protections installed. Then they redirect all that computing power toward the targeted computer in hopes of overwhelming it."
