Donald Trump Jr.'s wife was rushed to a local hospital after opening an envelope that contained a mysterious white powder.
The incident occurred on Feb. 12 at around 10 a.m. Vanessa Trump was opening a letter that was addressed to her husband when she discovered the mysterious white powder inside, the New York Post reported.
The letter was postmarked from Boston. Vanessa Trump was rushed to a local hospital as a precaution. She was accompanied by her mother, Bonnie Haydon, and an unidentified third party, sources said.
Haydon touched the letter before handing it to her daughter. The envelope also including a threatening letter that described Donald Trump Jr. as a terrible person.
The Secret Service, New York Police Department, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, and the Department of Environmental Protection all worked together in responding to the scene. Investigators confirmed that the mysterious white substance inside the envelope was corn starch.
"How disturbed must a person be to do what they did to a mother of five young children?" President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, said in response to the incident. "This dangerous and reckless act goes beyond political differences."
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also responded to the incident.
"I know the president spoke with [Vanessa]," Sanders said. "Beyond that at this point, it’s an ongoing and active investigation so I can’t comment any further."
Donald Trump Jr. married Vanessa Trump in November of 2005 at his father's Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. First daughter Ivanka Trump took to Twitter to offer words of support to her sister-in-law.
"Thinking of [Vanessa Trump] & wishing I was by her side today," Ivanka Trump wrote. "No one deserves to be frightened this way. There is no excuse."
Donald Trump Jr. also took to Twitter to thank law enforcement officials for their help and condemn whomever may have been responsible for the letter.
"Thankful that Vanessa & my children are safe and unharmed after the incredibly scary situation that occurred this morning," Donald Trump Jr. wrote. "Truly disgusting that certain individuals choose to express their opposing views with such disturbing behavior."
"A special thanks today to the great men & women of the [NYPD, FDNY, Secret Service, [FBI], and the Joint Terrorism Task Force for their decisive action and incredible words of support to my wife and family," the president's son added in a later tweet. "Their professionalism under pressure made a rough day manageable."
