Donald Trump suggested on Jan. 19 that Hillary Clinton is fearing jail time. The business mogul was referring to Clinton’s scandalous use of a private server while she was Secretary of State. There has been no indication that Clinton will be brought up on charges for the matter.
During a rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Trump reportedly blasted Clinton for speaking highly of U.S. President Barack Obama during the last Democratic debate.
“You notice how positive she is about the president?” Trump asked a crowd of his supporters, according to Business Insider. “You know why, right? You know why? Because she wants to stay out of the clink. That’s why, OK. Believe me, that’s why.”
The FBI has been investigating the former Secretary’s use of a private server to ensure that highly sensitive intelligence secrets had not been compromised, but the investigation is of the State Department, not of Clinton herself.
There has been no actual confirmation that Clinton is being specifically investigated by the FBI, although unofficial sources have been continually telling Fox News that she is.
Clinton has campaigned largely on the promise that she will continue the policies of Obama.
During the Jan. 17 Democratic debate, the former Secretary of State accused her rival for the party nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, of denigrating Obama’s legacy while they debated Wall Street reform, CNN reports.
“I am going to defend President Obama for taking on Wall Street, taking on the finance industry for getting results,” Clinton said.
Trump is now using Clinton’s support of the president as a rhetorical tool to suggest that she’s fearing legal trouble, a recurring strategy in the business mogul’s style of throwing out hypotheticals to slam his presidential opponents.
“I mean, every single thing: ‘Oh, the president is wonderful,’” Trump continued, according to Business Insider. “She never thought the president was wonderful before. She couldn’t stand the president. And frankly he couldn’t stand her. Now all of a sudden he’s ‘wonderful, wonderful.’”
“It’s very simple,” Trump concluded. “She wants to make sure she gets through this thing, and he does have the power of the presidency. So who the hell knows?”
While Clinton and Obama’s battle for the Democratic nomination in 2008 was notoriously heated, they did proceed to work closely together for four years after.
Trump also slammed Clinton’s use of a private server during a recent interview with radio show host Howie Carr, Breitbart reports.
“What she did is so ridiculous, it’s so, frankly stupid … she was conniving, you know it’s just the way she is,” Trump said.
“With that kind of ineptitude you can’t be President of the United States," he added.
