Transgender Woman Denied Ladies Night Drinks

The owner of a Florida bar is apologizing for his employees' refusal to give free booze to a transgender woman on Ladies Night, even though she is legally a female.

The Daily Mail reports that Alex Borrego and her drag queen friend were initially given free drinks at the Bishop Tavern and Lounge in St. Petersburg Thursday night. But then a bouncer came over and stopped the flow, saying, "You're dudes."

Borrego then whipped out her driver's license to show that she is legally a woman. She has taken hormones and other "measures" to change her gender.

"Legally, I'm a woman," Borrego told the Tampa Bay Times. "And to deny me to participate in ladies night, that's very disrespectful."

By Friday a Facebook boycott of the bar drew 250 fans, prompting owner Dean Marshlack to issue an apology on the bar's Facebook page, saying his bouncer was "misinformed":

This event has given us the opportunity to better educate our staff to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience regardless of who you are.

A co-owner of Bishop has had thorough conversations with two of those involved. We are all pleased with the awareness provided and the results of these dialogues.

Borrego said despite the apology, she won't be returning to Bishop Tavern anytime soon.
