Transgender Florida Student Alex Wilson Banned From Women’s Room

A Florida nursing student who is in the midst of a hormone therapy process designed to transform her from a male into a female has been banned from using the women’s restroom at the trade school she attends. Alex Wilson has been undergoing hormone therapy for the last four years and is in the process of becoming a licensed practical nurse by taking classes at Pinellas Technical Education Center in Clearwater, Fla.

Wilson had been using the women’s restroom at school up until Monday, when school officials pulled her out of class and told her that the bathroom was off limits. Apparently an unidentified student complained to the administration. If Wilson violates the order, the consequences are quite serious, The Daily Caller reported.

“If I continue to use the female restroom that I would have charges pressed against me,” Wilson said. “Because of that I would be removed from the program as a nurse.”

The old bathroom was close to her classroom, but now Wilson has to trek all the way to the administration building to use the facilities.

"It's a small restroom in, what looks like a storage part of the administration building," she said. "There's some cabinets, cleaning supplies."

It is not clear if using the men’s room is an option at this point. Whatever the case, Wilson is not happy about it.

“It’s not right," she said. "The fact that I would have to continue to use that restroom for the continuation of my education, that’s not right.”

A school spokeswoman commented on their side of the issue.

“In a scenario such as the one you’re describing, a person will be offered access to a private restroom,” said Melanie Marquez Parra. “That’s for the individual’s privacy and for the privacy of other students.”
