Mother Finds 2-Year-Old Daughter Frozen To Death Outside In The Snow

When 5-year-old Melody Mazur took her younger sister Raelyn to play in the snow a week ago, she never expected it to be the last time she would see her sibling alive.

Tragedy struck last week when Courtney Mazur woke up at 4:45 AM to help her fiancé get ready for work. As she went outside to warm up his truck, she discovered a horrific sight: her 2-year-old daughter Raelyn "lying face down on my patio with her eyes open like a porcelain doll," she told reporters.

"We have motion sensor lights outside, and when I opened the door ever so slightly, the light turned on and I found my daughter," she told local channel FOX 9

According to the family, Raelyn and her older sister decided to play in the snow outside sometime between the hours of 10:30 PM and 4:45 AM. Eventually, Melody wanted to go back inside while Raelyn refused, choosing to continue playing in the snow instead.

Melody had left the door unlocked but not the screen door, which led to the child's demise.

Raelyn was discovered frostbitten and unconscious. She was rushed to a hospital in Tomah, and then transferred to the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester. However, it was too late. She was pronounced brain dead by doctors there.

"I don't think she knows how to open, to push the button to get in the screen," Courtney told reporters, showing them the screen door.

Raelyn's organs were donated at the time of her death, with her kidneys going to a 47-year-old woman and her liver to a 66-year-old woman.

For now, the family will mourn the tragic death of their daughter and Courtney warns parents to install alarms on their doors.

"It's just heartbreaking to think if I had done this sooner, my baby would still be here," she said.
