A Taiwanese tourist in Australia plunged off the St. Kilda’s pier because of Facebook, according to Victoria state police.
The woman was walking along the Port Phillip’s Bay in Melbourne on Monday night when she checked her Facebook feed and fell off the pier into the water.
A witness called for help and police rushed to help the woman who was floating in the water about 65 feet from the pier.
“She was still out in the water lying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn’t swim,” Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the state water police told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.
It’s no surprise Facebook can be distracting, but as with social media in general, Kelly warns, “if you’re anywhere near the water just pay attention. Especially if you can’t swim.”
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.
While the distracted woman lost her balance on the pier, she made sure not to lose her phone.
“She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologized and said sorry,” Kelly said.
