A man who was at the center of a prank pulled by Oscars 2017 host Jimmy Kimmel, "Gary from Chicago," had been in prison for more than 22 years for attempted rape.
Gary Alan Coe and his fiancee, Vickie Vines, were two of the tourists given a surprise entrance to the Dolby Theater during the Oscars on Feb. 26 and greeted by the front row of stars.
The shocked pair were recording the whole event on their smart phones and when asked by Kimmel, revealed they were engaged to be married. Several Hollywood stars greeted them and Denzel Washington even pretended to marry them.
The South Shore Chicago man had been released from a Bakersfield, California, prison just days prior, WLS reports.
According to the Daily Mail, one of the felonies he had been initially charged with was attempted rape.
Originally jailed in October 1994, Coe is a registered sex offender, public documents reveal. It is unknown whether Oscars event organizers knew of Coe's status as such.
When interviewed, Gary said: "Change is possible. It's a sad day to be in prison for 20 years and not be able to be a dad, granddad to your children."
He continued: "You know what my son told me today, man, and I almost come to tears. He said he's proud of me. So to hear your children say that they're proud of me means the world to me."
Coe was released from Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison -- the "largest addiction treatment center in the world," reports the Daily Mail. The facility treats as many as 1,500 imprisoned addicted felons with up to 20 hours of weekly therapy.
The prison offers education programs, as well.
Coe met Vickie while he was in prison and eventually became devoutly religious. The couple is set to marry sometime this summer in California.
An actor licensed to perform weddings in California openly offered his services to the Chicago pair.
"Blackish" star Anthony Anderson stated he'd be keen on marrying the couple on live television.
However, Coe and Vines have yet to accept his offer.
