Top ABC Newsman Becomes Newswoman, Transitions from Don Ennis to Dawn Ennis

A producer at ABC News has made the transition from a male to a female after years of struggling to come out with her new identity.

Dawn Stacey Ennis used to be Don Ennis. She has left her wife of 17 years and their three children to start a new life as a female.

When she arrived for work, the 49-year-old was wearing a brown wig, makeup, and was dressed as a woman. Her coworkers embraced her new identity, giving her cake.

Ennis also received a note from ABC News President Ben Sherwood, welcoming her new identity.

Though she knew she wanted to be a woman for sometime, she and her family kept a secret until now.

On her Facebook page, she said it wasn't a midlife crisis.

"Trust me, this is NOT the midlife crisis I was counting on - I'd much prefer to have brought a sports car," she wrote. "Even an affair, I think, would have been something we might have recovered from. It is my affirmation of who I now am and what I must do to be happy, in response to a soul-crushing secret that my wife and I have been dealing with for more than seven years, mostly in secret."

A hormone imbalance resulting from her mother feeding her estrogen to prevent puberty, out of fear it would ruin her career as a child actor, caused Ennis to develop breasts and a lifelong medical condition.

She said her condition "wrecked" her marriage.

"Despite the heartbreak, [Wendy] has encouraged me to start this new life that we both believe better fits who I now am," Ennis wrote.

Before she took on her new identity, she feared she would lose her job if she came out as a woman.

"I have begun transition, just not at work, and the job/wife/family dynamic is what's stopping me from full-time, and probably rightly so," she wrote on YouTube last year.

But she was surprised to find that all of her co-workers supported her transition when she came to work on Friday.

"I'm overwhelmed by the strong support I've received from my coworkers, and I'm looking forward to telling my story when I'm ready," she said.
