SAN DIEGO, CA -- A 29-year-old Oceanside man was sentenced Monday to 21 years and 8 months in federal prison for driving 10 tons of marijuana north from the border.
Federal agents followed Carlos Cunningham from a warehouse near San Ysidro to the Temecula Border Patrol checkpoint, near the San Diego-Riverside County border. There they stopped him and found 19,400 lbs. of pot in his truck, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
The reefer had been smuggled into the country in a tunnel from Mexico, which ended at the San Ysidro warehouse. Another 14 tons of pot was found in the warehouse, and nearly 5 more tons inside a house at the southern end of the tunnel, in Tijuana.
Cunningham pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute marijuana.
