Thousands Apply for One-Way Ticket to Mars

While taking a one-way trip to Mars seems risky, thousands have applied for a ticket to the red planet through the Mars One project.

In total, there have been at least 20,000 applications sent after just one week.

The one-way ticket is offered by Dutch organization Mars One, and won't be available until 2023. But the goal is to send 24 people to the planet, permanently.

The only requirements for the trip are showing resilience, adaptability and curiosity. One does not need any astronaut experience, as training will be provided prior to the trip.

Submission videos have been uploaded onto the Mars One website, so people can vote for who they want to send to Mars.

"Gone are the days when bravery and the number of hours flying a supersonic jet were the top criteria," Norbert Kraft, Mars One's chief medical director, said.

"For this mission of permanent settlement, we are more concerned with how well each astronaut lives and works with others and their ability to deal with a lifetime of challenges."

Other criteria needed to apply for the ticket is being at least 18 years old, 5'2" or taller and have 20/20 vision. The colonists will then go through six to eight years of training and will be placed in teams of four, training together in simulated living conditions of the planet.

Then, finally, the first four will be chosen to settle on Mars.

They are planning to send out four people at a time. Once all 24 have settled, they will send four more every two years.

Mars One is expected to cost $6 billion, and funding is expected to be gained from interactive, global TV shows showing the astronauts training and then living on the planet.

"This would be 'real' reality TV - adventure is automatically included; we don't have to add fake challenges," Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp said. "By sending a new crew every two years, Mars will have a real, growing settlement of humans - who would not like to follow that major event in human history?"
