A high school softball player is facing heavy criticism after a video surfaced of her knocking opposing players to the ground (video shown below).
“I was just on the ground and my helmet flew off,” Demi Janak, a softball player for Huffman Hargrave High School in Houston, Texas, told KPRC 2. Janak had been running to the home plate during her team’s 4A championship game against Needville High School when she was allegedly knocked to the ground by Needville’s catcher.
Later in the game, video footage shows what it appears to be the catcher elbowing another player.
After the second fall, players on the Hargrave team were visibly upset. Officials at the schools commended the players for how they handled the situation though.
"I think it fired them up to score some more runs, win the game and come out as champions," said Mike McEachern, the Athletic Director for Huffman Independent School District.
Hargrave ultimately won the game despite the falls with a score of 6-4.
According to Janak, she is not angry over the incident.
“She did what she wanted to do in order to try and keep us from scoring,” she said, “but it doesn’t matter to me because we won overall.”
Upon hearing the story, many took to Facebook to voice their opinions on the matter.
“She should face suspension next season,” one user commented. “She’s a dirty player. Hope she gets ran over next time.”
“Yes that was unnecessary and she [should] have been removed from the game,” wrote another person, “but this is squarely on the shoulders of the umpire who clearly is looking straight at the play. This is poor officiating and this umpire [should] be suspended as well. His lack of action in enforcing the rules could have caused players to be injured.”
