A Texas man who claims he found his wife and infant son with their throats slit, was arrested for capital murder after being stopped by police on the way to Las Vegas.
Craig Vandewege, 35, was pulled over for speeding in Colorado, reports the Daily Mail. Vandewege told police he was headed to Las Vegas and that his wife and infant son had been murdered several days earlier.
When police searched Vandewege, they found two loaded weapons, a concealed-carry permit from Texas, and a pack of condoms.
Vandewege was later arrested on capital murder charges. According to authorities, he had been stalling the investigation by refusing to cooperate with police. At one point, Vandewege even left an interview with police to call his lawyer, and never returned.
Fort Worth detective Matt Barron said: "It's standard and it's normal for us to try to exclude people close [to the victim] before we can move on and look elsewhere. It stalls our investigation if there's somebody that close that says flat out, 'No, I'm not going to do it.'"
Vandewege’s wife, 36-year-old Shana Riddle Vandewege, and their infant son Diederik, were found with their throats slit at the family’s home in Fort Worth, Texas on Dec. 15. Vandewege claims he arrived home from his shift at Costco to find his wife and infant son dead.
The couple moved to Fort Worth earlier in the year, and had been trying for a long time to conceive a child, according to WFAA. Riddle Vandewege worked as a registered nurse, while Craig found a job at Costco.
"A new mother, a 3-month-old baby ... why? Why kill them? There's no reason," a family member said.
The motive for the murders remains unclear.
