A man accused of sexually abusing a 3-year-old girl has been sentenced to life in prison in Fort Worth, Texas.
The man, 28-year-old Phillip Gene Hernandez, was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 6. According to the AP, jurors needed less than 10 minutes to deliberate before issuing Hernandez his life sentence without parole.
In addition to his sexual abuse charges, Hernandez had several criminal charges pending against him which were discussed during the hearing. The man had previously been accused of robbery, felony theft burglary of a habitation, and drug possession. All of those crimes allegedly took place during a spree in 2012, during which Hernandez robbed a fast food restaurant, burglarized the same house twice and stole two cars. Upon his arrest, he was discovered to be in possession of methamphetamine. The sexual abuse crime also took place during that year.
According to the Dallas News, Hernandez’s crime against the girl was discovered after she reported to a family friend that the man had hurt her. After she was examined at Cook Children’s Medical Center, investigators discovered that she had been sexually assaulted and that Hernandez had forced her to perform oral sex on him.
