A Texas couple has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 1-year-old baby girl.
Isaac Cardenas, 23, and Crystal Herrera, 22, initially told police that the 21-month-old toddler had been attacked by dogs, KSAT reported.
Investigators arrived and examined the girl’s injuries. They found stab wounds on her upper body and private parts.
“As deputies started examining the little girl, they noticed that injuries were not consistent with the story that was being given,” said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, according to KSAT.
Animal control officials sent to collect the dogs said the animals showed no signs of aggression.
Salazar stated that the injuries to the girl were “egregious” and “heart-breaking.” Media reports added that they were too brutal to report in full.
“The child's injuries are quite severe,” Salazar added. “There's just no other way. I can't even begin to describe to you the level of depravity that went into this crime.”
Cardenas initially said the girl got outside in the middle of the night and was mauled by dogs. Herrera, a relative of the girl, alleged she tried to get help after noticing the toddler bleeding while bathing her. However, she stated that her car got stuck in the sand.
It was later discovered that a previous case of abuse involving Herrera was on record, when she again failed to get help for the girl.
After she was rushed to the hospital, doctors performed surgery on the girl. She suffered “acute respiratory failure” following the operation.
“I’ve got seasoned detectives and emergency room personnel that have all agreed that this is one of the worst cases they’ve seen,” Salazar added, according to San Antonio Express-News.
He added that he had no desire to see the pictures of the injuries because the description he was given was so horrifying.
The child’s condition was described as stable Jan. 3. She will require reconstructive surgery to repair her injuries.
Cardenas was charged with super aggravated sexual assault of a child. His bond was set at $300,000. If convicted, he could face 20 years behind bars.
Herrera was charged with injury to a child by omission.
The baby girl will be taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.
