Texas Couple Reunited With Their Son After Accusing Doctor Of Swapping Him At Birth

A U.K. man and his wife who accused a doctor in El Salvador of swapping their baby after birth have been reunited with their child.

As previously reported by Opposing Views, Richard Cushworth and his Salvadoran wife, Mercedes Casanella, feared that their newborn baby had been exchanged at birth and possibly sold to human traffickers.

The couple, who live in the U.S., are Christian missionaries and in May, they traveled to El Salvador, where they had their baby.

Casanella reportedly said knew something was off when she noticed the skin color of the baby she was handed at the hospital was darker than that of the baby she saw during birth. When the couple returned to Dallas, Texas, they got a DNA test which proved that the baby they were given was not theirs.

The couple's doctor, Alejandro Guidos, was formally accused of exchanging their child for another and subsequently arrested, but he claimed his innocence.

According to Casanellas, Guidos told her repeatedly that their son would be dark-skinned, despite the father being white.

"I always thought that was strange," she said, according to Buzzfeed. "How would he know that from the ultrasound scans, and why would he keep saying it?"

She said that an anesthetist gave her something to put her to sleep after the birth. When she woke up, she was given a baby that looked very different from the one she held after the delivery.

On Monday, the parents were reunited with their child.

Their lawyer, Francisco Meneses made a statement about the incident, BBC reports.

“We don’t have anything against the people who were involved during the baby’s birth, but we want all these people to put their hands on their hearts because from the doctor who performed the surgery, the pediatrician, anesthesiologist, and the two nurses who were in the delivery room, it’s very important for them to tell us what happened,” he said.
